New Year in Thailand



I am a transit passenger in Bangkok today. The city celebrated Songkran - the Thai new year today. The date on the banner in the picture shows yesterday, but the celebration was really today.
Songkran sounds so similar to Sangkranti. Also the new year seems to co-incide very much with the Bengalis' "Nabo Borsho" (meaning new year) as also the Baisakhi in Punjab. I guess some of this can be explained by the ancient influence of Indian culture on Thailand.

But here's the funniest part - Bangkok celebrates Songkran on the streets by splashing water mixed with white powder on passersby. Not exactly the same as our Holi, but the resemblance is too close to be just a co-incidence.
Should I google this up or leave it to our imagination how the Holi became Songkran in Thailand? is there a massage, sorry message there somewhere (more pictures coming).

    @ghazal: yeah...maybe why not....but i understand the story is-- earlier it used to be all kind of colors ....now only white is permitted by the cops.

Amir Khan at IIM - Bangalore

A colleague of mine informed me that Aamir Khan was playing badminton at IIM(B) . Big deal!!! But then I thought, it is less than a couple of minute's drive away...and let's face it...Amir Khan is a bigdeal!! I have been reading in the newspapers that the Super Star and some of the cast and crew of Three Idiots were camping at IIM(B). So here was my chance. I grabbed my camera and started off. True to its reputation, the couple of minute's drive on Banerghata Road proved a lot more than that with heavy traffic on Saturday night. Infact it was a big night at IIM(B) otherwise as well as there fest is going on. Using my contact, and showing adequate at outrage at the poor security guard manning the side gate for trying to stop a Professor. ... (my act of outrage actually provoked a stifled laughter from my colleague) I reached the badminton court and clicked away many a photographs and a few short videos. Obviously, now I feel to bashful to show it around to my colleagues ...

It is the pornography that binds us!

On the verge of stepping onto the wrong side of 30, many memories flit by, not all pleasant. Of the memories that are pleasant, the ones from my days in school, standout. I passed my 12th Std in 1991… from one of the not quite leading schools of Calcutta…sorry….Kolkata. It was a Kolkata without today’s multiplexes and shopping mall. For better or for worse, Lindsay Street, Chowringhee, Park Street were still the most happening places in the city and school days were much different from what they would be now, at least in one aspect. The difference was pornography…or more accurately, the availability, sharing and quality of it. Yes, the wonderful, stimulating and informative world of pornography was different then. Those were the days when the internet was unheard of…a VCR (or the cheaper VCP) was a possession of pride… to be found in only a few privileged households in the neighbourhood or for that matter in our circle of friends… and the colour TV….though catching on was still a novel...

News Wrap

Here’s a quick wrap-up of some of the more interesting happenings in the recent past. The Chinese New Year is the Year of the Rat and Malaysian women developed a taste in a particular type of linen. "Malaysian Chinese women are snapping up red panties with mouse motifs for good luck as they prepare to usher in the Year of the Rat, a news report said on Sunday." Read full report . First things first, what’s with the Chinese new years……last year they had the year of the Pig, this year the year of the Rat!!! Are there no better animals? I mean a pig in any language would serve as a fairly all embracing abusive word, and rat….that certainly cannot be flattery whether you are a Chinese or an English man. Should we not expect a year of the Tiger or at least Dragon!! Ofcourse with my usual objectvity and broad-mindedness, I find nothing worng in Ganesha’s vahana (consort) ….now is that a rat or a mouse? And let’s move on to these Malaysian women. A mouse motif on your inner-ware?...
